Yoga for Kids: Playful Poses to Encourage Mindfulness and Movement

 

Yoga can be a great way to encourage mindfulness and movement in kids. Here are some playful yoga poses that kids can enjoy:

  1. Cat-Cow Stretch (Marjaryasana-Bitilasana): Come onto your hands and knees, with your wrists directly under your shoulders and your knees directly under your hips. As you inhale, arch your back and lift your head and tailbone. As you exhale, round your spine and tuck your chin to your chest. This pose can be done while making animal sounds to add a playful element.

  2. Downward Facing Dog (Adho Mukha Svanasana): Come onto your hands and knees, with your wrists directly under your shoulders and your knees directly under your hips. Walk your hands forward a few inches and tuck your toes under. Lift your hips up and back, straightening your arms and legs. This pose can be combined with barking like a dog or pretending to be a superhero.

  3. Tree Pose (Vrksasana): Stand with your feet hip-width apart and shift your weight to one foot. Place the sole of your other foot on the inside of your standing leg, either above or below the knee. Bring your hands to your heart or raise them above your head. This pose can be done while imagining being a strong, rooted tree.

  4. Butterfly Pose (Baddha Konasana): Sit on the floor with the soles of your feet together and knees bent out to the sides. Hold onto your ankles or feet and gently flap your legs like butterfly wings. This pose can be done while singing a butterfly song or pretending to fly like a butterfly.

  5. Bridge Pose (Setu Bandha Sarvangasana): Lie on your back with your knees bent and feet flat on the floor. Place your arms at your sides with your palms facing down. Press into your feet and lift your hips up towards the ceiling. This pose can be done while imagining crossing a bridge over a river.

  6. Corpse Pose (Savasana): Lie on your back with your arms and legs relaxed, palms facing up. Close your eyes and allow your body to completely relax. This pose can be done while listening to calming music or guided imagery.

Encourage kids to use their imaginations and make the poses their own. It's important to make sure they are having fun and not pushing themselves too hard. Always supervise children during yoga practice and encourage them to listen to their bodies.
