Yoga for Allergies
Yoga can be a helpful complementary therapy for managing allergies, as it can help to reduce stress and inflammation in the body. Here are some yoga poses and breathing exercises that may be beneficial for managing allergy symptoms:
-
Pranayama: Pranayama or breathing exercises can be effective in clearing the nasal passages and reducing inflammation in the body. One effective pranayama for allergies is Nadi Shodhana (alternate nostril breathing). To do this, sit comfortably with your spine straight. Hold your right nostril closed with your right thumb and inhale deeply through your left nostril. Then, hold your breath for a moment, then close your left nostril with your ring finger and release the breath through the right nostril. Repeat the process by inhaling through the right nostril and releasing through the left.
-
Bhujangasana: Bhujangasana or Cobra Pose is beneficial for opening up the chest and lungs, which can help with breathing difficulties. To do this, lie on your stomach with your hands placed next to your shoulders. Inhale and lift your upper body, keeping your elbows close to your body. Hold this pose for a few breaths, then release.
-
Adho Mukha Svanasana: Adho Mukha Svanasana or Downward Facing Dog Pose can help to alleviate sinus pressure and reduce inflammation. To do this, start on your hands and knees, with your wrists under your shoulders and your knees under your hips. Exhale and lift your hips up and back, straightening your arms and legs. Keep your head down and your neck relaxed.
-
Supported Bridge Pose: Supported Bridge Pose is a restorative pose that can help to relieve stress and anxiety, which can exacerbate allergy symptoms. To do this, lie on your back with your knees bent and feet on the floor. Place a yoga block or bolster under your lower back and hips, and allow your body to relax and release tension.
Remember to listen to your body and breathe deeply throughout your yoga practice. If you have severe allergies or breathing difficulties, it's important to consult with your healthcare provider before starting any new exercise or wellness routine.
